Most people start to slow down after they turn sixty; they walk less, lift less, and live smaller. My dad was heading down that same path. Since everyone on my dad’s side of the family has diabetes, when I first became a Dietitian and tried to help him, he didn’t want to listen. He said, “You can do your own thing”. Then I told him that I am very grateful for him, paying for my education. If he doesn’t listen to the things I learn from school that he helped pay for, he is actually wasting his own money. Of course, wasting money is not acceptable; also he found out from his doctor that he is getting to the prediabetes stage, something finally clicked. He finally gave my plan a chance. Together, we adjusted his meals, built a simple fitness routine, and overall lifestyle. Now, at eighty-three, he walks 10,000 steps, swims, and strength trains daily. He also plays lawn bowling with friends three times a week. When we go on vacation, he joins us with the different excursions such as snorkeling, hiking, biking, and kayaking. He’s stronger, sharper, and more independent than ever.
