Hi everyone, I’m Sophie Hung, the dietitian and personal trainer. For the past 13 years, I helped thousands of Asian professionals and their parents to reverse type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, manage chronic kidney disease and restore gut health.
I was able to transform their lives because I understand their mindset and and struggles of the Asian immigrant community. Because I too was born in Hong Kong and moved with my family to the US when I was 14 and had to learn English quickly. When I was 16, my whole family had a near death, very traumatizing experience in a major car accident which I lost my mom.
But thankfully, a social worker and the local church take very good care of us, which I was forever grateful. And I became a Christian. Since then I was committed to paying it forward and making a difference in people’s lives through my career. And let me share a little bit about why I became a dietitian.
My grandma spent the last 10 years of her life in bed after having a stroke and it was not fun to watch. And everyone on my dad’s side of the family all have diabetes. And my uncle once told me that every morning then he has to take a whole cocktail of pills and then he has no appetite to eat breakfast afterward.
And in addition to diabetes and stroke, my family also have high cholesterol, breast cancer and endometriosis. And I was very overwhelmed when I first learned about all of that. But instead of focusing on things that I can change, such as my genetic, I try to focus on things that I can control so such as my diet, exercise, stress management and overall lifestyle.
And that’s why I decided to study nutrition so that I can at least help myself, my family and anyone who want to take control of the health. And I also believe that diet and exercise go hand in hand. So I became a personal trainer and the Pilates instructor as well.
And my 82 years young dad, he used to have high cholesterol and diabetes and thought he had to take his medication the rest of his life. But now, thanks to me helping with his diet, exercise and overall lifestyle, he’s able to gradually get off of them. It was not easy in the beginning because he was very stubborn and resistant to changing decades of bad habit or trying new things.
But I told my dad I’m very grateful for him paying for my education, but if he doesn’t listen to my recommendations that I learned from the school that he helped pay for, he’s actually wasting his own money. And of course wasting money is not acceptable. And since then he start to change.
He currently does 10k step strength training, goes swimming every day, and does lawn bowling two times a week. And when we go on vacation he’s able to go hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, biking with us.
My mission is to help people with chronic diseases to thrive and not just survive so that their conditions doesn’t stop them from traveling, hanging out with their grandkids, or doing things that they enjoy.
